History of The Bluffs

The Bluffs on Thompson Creek

The Natural Inspiration
Louisiana’s most unique and most beautiful natural setting, the hilly wilderness of the Feliciana Parishes near St. Francisville, has inspired the creation of artistic masterpieces for generations.
The area was settled by pioneers of primarily English descent who built working cotton plantations that produced great wealth for Louisiana before the Civil War. And today the legacies of that “Plantation Era” include dozens of magnificent homes and gardens, now restored to their antebellum grandeur and serving as historic attractions to visitors from throughout the world.
Naturalist John James Audubon first came to the Felicianas to tutor the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner in the 1820s. He became immediately enchanted with the natural beauty of this unique Louisiana wilderness, which his memoirs refer to as the “sweet woods.” And while living at Oakley Plantation (now Audubon State Commemorative Area), just three miles from what is now The Bluffs on Thompson Creek, Audubon created more than 80 of his 300 classic “Birds of America” paintings.
A century and a half later, when Arnold Palmer first visited the site of his proposed Louisiana golf course, he became visibly excited by the dramatic natural beauty of the land. Today, Palmer’s 18-hole sculpture is yet another timeless masterpiece inspired by the natural setting, a wonderful journey through all the diverse landscapes of the Feliciana countryside.
Arnold Palmer was granted complete freedom to route his golf course at The Bluffs through each of the diverse landscapes of the property, and eight separate routings were staked and walked before the most dramatic and most natural 18 holes were identified. Only after the best golf holes were discovered was the surrounding residential community planned. The result of Palmer’s patient search for final routing of the course is a naturally beautiful golf course featuring uniquely different, challenging and unforgettable holes.
Since its opening in late 1988, the Palmer course at The Bluffs has steadily built a reputation as one of the best in the country. An 18-hole round at The Bluffs is a nature walk through all the diverse settings of the Feliciana countryside, starting and finishing atop the high bluffs along Thompson Creek, playing to a green located adjacent to a white, sand beach, traversing through thick forests of mature hardwoods and pines, and attempting challenging shots over hills, off bluffs, and into hollows.
The Community
Today, within our growing community at The Bluffs on Thompson Creek, the natural inspiration continues. Proud property owners are contributing their own legacies, building and maintaining their dream homes in harmony with the unique environment of Audubon’s “sweet woods” and enjoying a quality of life that includes a generous daily dose of natural inspiration.
Each property owner is automatically a member of the Property Owners Association (POA) and is subject to its covenants and restrictions as well as the architectural and landscaping guidelines of the Design Review Board. The architectural guidelines are designed not primarily to specify home size, but instead to require fine construction standards and to assure that every new residence at The Bluffs will add to the value and appeal of our community. The landscaping guidelines emphasize preserving native flora and enhancing each new home with dogwood, azalea, camellia, crepe myrtle, bridal wreath, redbud, magnolia, and other trees and shrubs typical of the historic gardens of Louisiana’s “Plantation Era.”
Our community includes The Bluffs Country Club and a condo-style lodging facility, The Lodge at The Bluffs. The Cub is comprised of like-minded individuals who appreciate the beauty of the Club’s setting as well as the wonderful amenities the club has to offer. Club membership is not required to own property at The Bluffs but is encouraged as the Club’s presence and amenities have a positive impact on property values and also help to sustain the beauty and convenience of our community.
As The Bluffs has grown, so has its reputation for quiet relaxed living, comfort and convenience. Our community displays warm friendliness usually reserved for close friends and family. Enjoy the company of other successful individuals who come together to relax, spend time with friends and neighbors and share their commitment to a life well-lived.
